News From The Parochial Vicar

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This weekend, we begin to hear from our Lord’s Sermon on the Mount. Matthew 5-7 will lay out Jesus’ teachings on Christian living and his perfection of Old Covenant moral laws. The Sermon on the Mount starts with the well-known Beatitudes. God desires our happiness. He doesn’t want us to be lacking in anything. The problem, often, is that we try to find this happiness in the things of this world: wealth, power, honor, and pleasure. While it is true that those things can provide happiness for a time, they do not truly satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts. Only God can satisfy that hunger. Those who recognize their need for God and his mercy, unattached to the things of this world, find their security in the Lord and not material wealth. The meek and humble, while seeming to the world to be powerless, possess an inner strength to resist evil amid discouragement. Those who yearn to live rightly before God and do not seek the honors of this world will rejoice in the kingdom of heaven. And those whose hearts are not caught up in the pleasures of this world will see God as the angels do now.

God reveals to the humble of heart the true source of abundant life and happiness. Jesus promises us that the joy of heaven will far exceed the hardships we can expect in this world. May we all continue to hunger and thirst for God above all else.

Please continue to keep Archbishop Hicks in your prayers. This coming Friday, February 6th, he will be formally installed as the Archbishop of New York. Although the Holy Father, Leo XIV, named him the archbishop back in December, this will be when he formally takes possession of his new Archdiocese as he will be placed in the Cathedra, which is his chair in St. Patrick Cathedral, by the Apostolic Nuncio. Once he is seated and takes up his crozier, or pastoral staff, he officially assumes the governance of the archdiocese.

We continue to pray for our next Bishop. While we do not know who that will be, we can and should still pray for him. As I write this article, we have not yet heard who will administrate the diocese. Due to the size of our diocese, we heard that the Apostolic Nuncio, the Holy Father’s representative to the United States, has indicated that he will assign our administrator. The administrator will “mind the store,” so to speak, until the Holy Father appoints our new bishop.

While we are undergoing a lot of change in this local church of Joliet, we should keep in mind that it is Christ who is the true shepherd, the Good Shepherd, who never abandons his Flock. He is our solid footing. He is the one who grounds us. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Blessing of Candles @ Candlemas aka The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord 2/2

On Monday, February 2, the Church celebrates Candlemas, also known as the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This beautiful feast marks the moment Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple, fulfilling the Law and offering Him to the Father. There, Simeon proclaims Jesus as “a light for revelation to the Gentiles” (Luke 2:32).
Candlemas is named for its most beloved tradition: the blessing of candles, which symbolize Christ, the Light of the world. As winter still lingers and Lent approaches, this feast gently turns our hearts toward the light that overcomes all darkness.
✨ Candle Blessings at OLM
Candles will be blessed at the 8:00 AM and 6:30 PM Masses. A limited number of candles will be available, and you are warmly invited to bring candles from home to be blessed and used throughout the year as gentle reminders of Christ’s light and presence in your home and prayer life.
This feast also reminds us of holy obedience and encounter: Mary and Joseph’s faithfulness, Simeon’s patient hope fulfilled, and Anna’s joyful witness. Candlemas stands as a threshold moment in the liturgical year, bridging the joy of Christmas with the journey toward Lent. Come celebrate Christ our Light, and let Him illumine our hearts anew.

The Curé Circle ~ A Monthly Hour of Prayer for Our Priests 2/2

Join us for The Curé Circle, a monthly prayer group inspired by St. John Vianney, patron saint of parish priests. Together, we’ll offer an hour of intentional prayer for our OLM priests, Fr. Michael and Fr. Vagenas, in gratitude and support of their vocation.

The Curé Circle meets every first Monday of the month. All are welcome—come and pray with us.

Help Stock the Shelves for the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry 2/2

Did you know our parish collects non-perishable food year-round for the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry? You’ll find three large collection bins in the Parish Life Center (PLC) lobby—just inside the doors, at the bottom of the stairs on the right. Each first Monday of the month, the pantry picks up all donated items to help restock its shelves. You can drop off the items at your convenience anytime.
Since 1981, the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry serves individuals and families struggling to meet their basic nutritional needs—neighbors who might otherwise go without.
With more people depending on community food programs, your donations make a real difference.
🛒 Food donations should be unopened and within the printed “use by” or “sell by” dates. The pantry gladly accepts a wide range of items, especially the following:
- Grains: cereal, oatmeal, rice, pasta
  Fruits & Vegetables: canned, dried, or fresh (including home-grown produce!)
  Proteins: canned tuna or chicken, beans (dried or canned)
  Ready-to-Make: soups, pasta sauces, pancake and baking mixes, macaroni and cheese
  Snacks for Kids: granola bars, crackers, juice boxes, applesauce, peanut butter, jelly
  Baby Products: diapers (all sizes), formula, baby food
  Personal Care: feminine supplies, over-the-counter medicine, incontinence items
Every can, box, and bag helps feed a neighbor in need, your generosity brings hope and nourishment to families right here in our community.

Blessing of Throats @ The Memorial of St. Blaise 2/3

On Tuesday, February 3, the Church observes the Memorial of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, and with it the cherished tradition of the Blessing of Throats.
St. Blaise is remembered for his compassionate care for the sick and for the miracle in which he healed a child who was choking, leading the Church to seek his intercession against illnesses of the throat and for healing of body and soul. During this blessing, the priest holds two crossed candles at the throat while praying that, through St. Blaise’s intercession, we may be protected from illness and every evil.

High School Confirmation Teens Search Retreats 2/6 - 2/7

Please keep our high school teens in your prayers as they take an important step in their faith journey through the overnight Search Retreats on February 6–7. As part of The Chosen Ascension Press Confirmation program, these retreats invite teens to deepen their relationship with Christ and prepare their hearts for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
During the Search Retreats, teens are encouraged to take greater ownership of their faith through meaningful prayer, small-group conversations, and time for personal reflection. They will have the opportunity to explore their God-given gifts, share their faith with peers, and grow in awareness of God’s presence in their daily lives.
May the Holy Spirit guide and strengthen each teen during this grace-filled time.

Come Spend Time with Jesus in the Adoration Chapel

“The time you spend with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the best time you will spend on earth” – St. Teresa of Calcutta
Our Adoration Chapel is open daily from 8:30 AM until 10:00 PM offering a quiet, sacred place to rest in the Lord’s presence, pour out your heart, and simply let Jesus love you.
We are especially in need of a committed adorer on Thursdays at 11:00 AM.
Nearly every hour already has at least one adorer, but having a second person ensures the chapel can remain open for anyone who feels the nudge to come and pray. When no one is present, the Blessed Sacrament doors must be closed—and we never want Jesus to be left alone.
If a weekly commitment isn’t possible right now, you’re also welcome to sign up as a substitute adorer, helping to cover hours when someone is unable to come; sign up at this link.
Your simple yes helps keep this sacred space open and makes it possible for others to encounter the Lord’s peace and mercy. Thank you for prayerfully considering this beautiful gift of time with Jesus in the Eucharist.

Support the Teen Mission Trip after all Masses 2/7 & 2/8

After all Masses on February 7 & 8, our high school teens will share briefly about their upcoming mission trip to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where they will serve families in need through Catholic Heart Workcamp.
Each teen has committed to this experience of faith and service and is responsible for the $725 cost, which covers the workcamp program, transportation, lodging, meals, and related expenses.
Throughout the year, our parish hosts fundraisers such as the Pancake Breakfast, Mission Trip Weekend, Lenten Fish Dinners, Bake Sales, and more to help reduce this cost for our teens.
A collection basket will be available in the narthex on the weekend Masses on February 7th and 8th. Your generosity directly supports our teens and helps make this life-changing mission possible. Divine Mercy Seminar 2/9 & 2/10

Discovering Divine Mercy Seminar
Prepare your heart for our Feast of Divine Mercy celebration on Sunday, April 12 by attending one of two Discovering Divine Mercy seminars: Monday, February 9 at 7:00 PM or Tuesday, February 10 at 8:30 AM, both in PLC 114.
Together we’ll explore the message of Divine Mercy revealed to St. Faustina, learn how to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and deepen our trust in Jesus’ unfathomable mercy. Living With Grief 2/10

Our monthly Grief Ministry support group will meet on Tuesday, February 10, from 1:00pm to 2:30pm in Room 217. This month our discussion is going to be led by Deacon Josh! Losing a loved one is never easy. This gathering offers adults (ages 18 and up) a compassionate space to share their journey through grief, supported by others within a faith-filled community. Following the 7:00 PM Stations of the Cross, the Justice & Peace Ministry invites you to a Lenten Soup Supper in the Parish Life Center. This simple gathering is a way to walk together in solidarity with those who experience hunger, sharing a humble meal of soup and bread during this sacred season.
A free-will offering is optional and will be shared between St. Vincent de Paul and the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels.

Stations of the Cross Fridays During Lent starts 2/20

Lent invites us to slow our steps and walk closely with Jesus on the way of the Cross. Each Friday during Lent, our parish will gather to pray the Stations of the Cross, entering more deeply into Christ’s Passion through prayer and reflection.

This Lent, our Stations of the Cross experience will be made even more prayerful and reverent by the beautiful facelift currently underway to the indoor Stations in the narthex. In addition to our communal prayer times, parishioners are encouraged to pray the Stations anytime throughout the day on Fridays during Lent. Whether during a quiet midday pause or in the evening with the parish community, the Stations are always available for personal prayer.

Lent invites us to re-center our lives, setting aside distractions so we can listen more attentively to the voice of God. A Lenten MAGNIFY on Wednesday, February 25, offers a prayerful midweek moment to do just that. Join us for an evening of Eucharistic Adoration, worship, Scripture reflection with Deacon Josh, Confession, and prayer ministry as we gaze upon Jesus truly present in the Eucharist.
This sacred pause in the middle of the week draws us out of striving and into trust. Rather than doing more, we come to be still, to open our hearts, and to allow the Holy Spirit to renew us and gently lead us back to the Father. MAGNIFY becomes a meaningful Lenten rhythm of repentance, healing, and deeper communion with Christ.

Help Stock the Shelves for the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry 2/2

Did you know our parish collects non-perishable food year-round for the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry? You’ll find three large collection bins in the Parish Life Center (PLC) lobby—just inside the doors, at the bottom of the stairs on the right. Each first Monday of the month, the pantry picks up all donated items to help restock its shelves. You can drop off the items at your convenience anytime.
Since 1981, the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry serves individuals and families struggling to meet their basic nutritional needs—neighbors who might otherwise go without.
With more people depending on community food programs, your donations make a real difference.
🛒 Food donations should be unopened and within the printed “use by” or “sell by” dates. The pantry gladly accepts a wide range of items, especially the following:
- Grains: cereal, oatmeal, rice, pasta
  Fruits & Vegetables: canned, dried, or fresh (including home-grown produce!)
  Proteins: canned tuna or chicken, beans (dried or canned)
  Ready-to-Make: soups, pasta sauces, pancake and baking mixes, macaroni and cheese
  Snacks for Kids: granola bars, crackers, juice boxes, applesauce, peanut butter, jelly
  Baby Products: diapers (all sizes), formula, baby food
  Personal Care: feminine supplies, over-the-counter medicine, incontinence items
Every can, box, and bag helps feed a neighbor in need, your generosity brings hope and nourishment to families right here in our community.
