Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, Happy New Year!
Today, with the First Sunday of Advent, we begin a new liturgical year. A new year rich with so many graces that the Lord wants to bestow upon you. A new chance for us to renew our commitment to Christ and his Church.
Also, with the new liturgical year we start a new cycle of readings. Our Sunday readings will be from "Year A" which will take us, for most Sundays, through the Gospel of St. Matthew. In our First Reading, from the Prophet Isaiah, we hear, "Come, let us climb the LORD's mountain, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may instruct us in his ways, and we may walk in his paths." Mountains in the scriptures are always places of encounter with God. How are you going to climb the Lord's mountain this coming year? Every day, we must strive to grow closer to Christ. We cannot stay stagnant; we are either moving towards Him or away from Him. On this first weekend of the new liturgical year, think of how you can grow closer to Christ. Perhaps you could plan to come to a daily Mass once or twice a week, or if possible, every day. Take time each day to read and reflect on the daily scriptures. Spend some more time with our Lord in our Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. Make it a point to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation more frequently. Whatever you can give to the Lord, he will return to you in great abundance. God will never be outdone in generosity!
The season of Advent is a period of waiting, of preparation, of hopeful expectation. We prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ, both at Christmas and at the end of time. In a few short weeks, we will celebrate His first coming at Christmas in simplicity, humility, and obscurity. We also prepare for his coming at the end of time when He will come in glory, majesty, and power. And that is what we always remember on the First Sunday of Advent- Christ's coming at the end of time. We are again reminded that we must always be "prepared for at an hour [we] do not expect, the Son of Man will come." We must always be ready. Amidst the busyness of these following weeks, as we are focused on shopping and wrapping presents, cleaning and getting the house ready for guests, make a point to take some time to prepare your heart for Christ. A beautiful way to prepare is by making a good confession of your sins; what a beautiful gift to give to Jesus for his birthday.

Our Adoration Chapel is open daily 8:30 AM until 10:00 PM — a sacred space to rest in His presence, pray, and let the love of Jesus renew your heart.
We invite you to consider committing to a regular hour of Adoration. Nearly every hour already has at least one adorer, but adding a second person ensures that our chapel remains open for anyone who wishes to spend time with Jesus. When no one is present, the Blessed Sacrament doors must be closed — and we never want Him to be left alone.

Mass of Thanksgiving for Transitional Deacon Topher Otieno12/7
- Join us in celebrating and giving thanks to God at a Mass of Thanksgiving offered by Transitional Deacon Topher Otieno on Sunday, December 7 at 12:00 pm here at Our Lady of Mercy, followed by a reception. The Mass will also be livestreamed for those who cannot attend in person.
A Mass of Thanksgiving is a joyful celebration in which the newly ordained deacon, together with the community, gives thanks to God for the grace of Holy Orders. During this special liturgy, Deacon Topher will assist at the altar for the first time in his new role, giving public thanks to God for his vocation and service to the Church.
Although originally from Kenya, Deacon Topher considers Our Lady of Mercy his home parish, and our community rejoices with him as he begins this new chapter of his journey toward the priesthood. Please keep him in your prayers as he continues to serve the Lord with joy and faith.
Drop Off Stockings for Families in Need 12/7
- Share the joy of Christmas by taking part in this year’s Angel Giving Program, which supports families and individuals served by St. Vincent de Paul, Hesed House, Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry, and Waterleaf Women’s Center.
You can help in two ways:- Give monetarily through our online giving portal under Angel Giving Fund, or by check payable to Our Lady of Mercy (include “Angel Giving” in the memo). Donations are accepted through December 31.
- Fill a Christmas stocking! Pick one up after any Mass the weekend of November 22–23 (or purchase one on your own), fill it with small gifts and toys, and return it to the bin by the Welcome Desk or the Parish Office by Sunday, December 7.
- Suggested stocking stuffers include: $5 gift cards (Target or McDonald’s), small toys, craft kits, socks, stickers, Play-Doh, and candy.

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary 12/8
- Monday, December 8 Mass Times: 8:00am • 12:00pm • 6:30pm
This holy day invites us to pause in wonder at the astonishing work God began in Mary from the very first moment of her existence. In 1854, Pope Pius IX solemnly proclaimed the long-held belief of the Church that Mary—chosen to be the Mother of the Savior—was preserved from original sin from her conception (Ineffabilis Deus).
This was not something she achieved; it was a pure gift of God’s grace so that she could freely and fully offer her “yes” to His plan.
The Catechism beautifully describes this mystery:- Mary was “full of grace,” enriched with gifts fitting for her vocation (CCC 490).
- She was redeemed in advance, preserved from original sin by Christ’s saving work (CCC 491).
- The Church venerates her as the “All-Holy,” fashioned by the Holy Spirit as a new creation (CCC 493).
- Under this title—the Immaculate Conception—Mary is also honored as the Patroness of the United States, making this feast especially meaningful for us.
- No Christmas Without Mary
Christmas quietly leans on this feast.
God, who could have stepped into history as a fully grown man, instead chose to arrive as a fragile child, cradled and carried by a woman whose heart was entirely open to Him.
Mary—our Mother, our model—never keeps anything for herself.
She always leads us to Jesus.
Her “yes” becomes a path for our own.
As we step into Advent’s hopeful waiting, may the Immaculate Conception remind us that God prepares the way long before we see the fullness of His plan.
And may our Blessed Mother continue to guide us ever closer to her Son—now, and at the hour of our death.
Grief Ministry 12/9
- Our monthly Grief Ministry support group will meet on Tuesday, December 9th from 1pm to 2:30pm in Room 217 or 6:30pm to 8:30pm in Room 217. Losing a loved one is never easy. This gathering offers adults (ages 18 and up) a compassionate space to share their journey through grief, supported by others within a faith-filled community. Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe 12/12
- Join us on Friday, December 12th, for a special celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. We’ll begin with a 12pm Mass and a special additional Mass at 6:30pm in Spanish, where roses for the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be available in the narthex. Following the evening Mass, there will be a reception in the Parish Life Center (PLC).
The image and message of Mary resonate deeply with themes of compassion, maternal care, and evangelization, fostering a stronger connection to our faith. Let’s come together as a parish community to reflect on her role in salvation history and the ongoing mission of the Church. Her embrace calls us to welcome all, especially the marginalized, embodying the values of compassion, service, and the Gospel message.

Annual Simbang Gabi Mass & Celebration 12/13
- Experience this cherished Filipino Advent tradition with a special Mass at 6:00 pm, followed by a festive dinner reception featuring traditional Filipino holiday dishes, a cultural program, games, and dancing.
Simbang Gabi is a nine-day series of Catholic masses that Filipino Catholics attend in preparation for Christmas. The name translates to "Night Mass" in Tagalog. It begins on December 16 and ends on Christmas Eve, December 24. This tradition was introduced to the Philippines by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century, and the masses were originally held at dawn to allow farmers to attend before going to work. In Spanish, Simbang Gabi is also known as Misa de Gallo, or "Mass of the Rooster." Churches are beautifully decorated with colorful lights, parol lanterns, and Nativity Scenes.

Retirement Fund Additional Collection 12/13 & 12/14
- During the weekend Masses, a special collection supporting the Retirement Fund for Religious, which provides housing, medical assistance, and essential care for more than 20,500 aging sisters, brothers, and religious order priests who spent their lives in service—often with little to no pay. Many communities now struggle to meet even basic needs such as medication and daily living costs. As Sister M. Stephanie Belgeri, 73, of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George in Alton, Illinois shares, “Thanks to your generosity, we can provide the very best care to the sisters in our community.” Your gift today allows these faithful servants to age with dignity. - Step into the story that prepares our hearts for Christmas. Join the Hispanic Ministry for four evenings that echo Mary and Joseph’s journey and the wonder of Christ’s coming—nights filled with prayer, song, community, and joyful celebration. December 16–18 at 7:00pm — Posadas (in the Church)
Experience Las Posadas, a treasured Advent tradition that retraces the Holy Family’s search for shelter.
Each evening includes the Rosary, seasonal songs, and simple moments of prayer, inviting us to welcome Christ with open doors and open hearts. December 19 at 7:00pm — Pastorela (in the PLC)
We conclude with a festive Pastorela, a Christmas play presented by our parish community.
After the performance, stay for a Potluck Dinner — a shared table of joy, hospitality, and delicious dishes as we draw near to the Nativity.

These gatherings, held in Spanish, are small lanterns in the Advent night, guiding us toward the manger with hope and warmth.

- Our yearly tradition of the Christmas Concert continues this year, featuring A New and Glorious Morn by Lloyd Larson, beginning at 11:15 PM on Christmas Eve.
- Accompanied by a mini chamber ensemble—including a string quartet, percussion, trumpet—and supported by the voices of the Our Lady of Mercy Choir under the direction of Frank Sauter, this musical invites us into the heart of the Christmas story. Through a thoughtful blend of familiar carols and original songs, A New and Glorious Morn reflects on the truth that in Christ, “the old is gone and the new has come.” It retells and celebrates the Nativity in a way that helps us encounter the Light and Life of Christmas with fresh attentiveness, reminding us of God’s promise of salvation offered to all who receive it in faith.

As we step into a new calendar year, the Church invites us to begin with Mary — the one who first bore Christ into the world and who continues to guide the Church as a mother. The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God is a Holy Day of Obligation because it celebrates the greatest truth of our faith: that Jesus is truly God and truly human, born of a woman who freely said “yes.”

Help Stock the Shelves for the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry 1/1
- Did you know our parish collects non-perishable food year-round for the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry? You’ll find three large collection bins in the Parish Life Center (PLC) lobby—just inside the doors, at the bottom of the stairs on the right. Each first Monday of the month, the pantry picks up all donated items to help restock its shelves. You can drop off the items at your convenience anytime.
Since 1981, the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry serves individuals and families struggling to meet their basic nutritional needs—neighbors who might otherwise go without.
With more people depending on community food programs, your donations make a real difference. - 🛒 Food donations should be unopened and within the printed “use by” or “sell by” dates. The pantry gladly accepts a wide range of items, especially the following:
- Grains: cereal, oatmeal, rice, pasta
Fruits & Vegetables: canned, dried, or fresh (including home-grown produce!)
Proteins: canned tuna or chicken, beans (dried or canned)
Ready-to-Make: soups, pasta sauces, pancake and baking mixes, macaroni and cheese
Snacks for Kids: granola bars, crackers, juice boxes, applesauce, peanut butter, jelly
Baby Products: diapers (all sizes), formula, baby food
Personal Care: feminine supplies, over-the-counter medicine, incontinence items

Support the Guatemala Adult Mission Trip 1/24 - 1/31/2026
- This past February (Feb 22–Mar 2, 2025), two OLM service teams built two new homes for families in Guatemala. Our former parochial vicar Fr. Frank Pusateri joined the mission—celebrating daily Mass, working alongside the team, and bringing Christ’s love to the families we served.
- In January 2026 (Saturday, January 24 – Saturday, January 31) we are sending three teams to build three homes. Each volunteer is personally responsible for their trip cost (about $1,700 per person, which includes building materials and costs, housing, most meals, bottled water, and ground transportation).
