News From The P.I.T. (Pastor in Training)
I should have looked at the readings before choosing this weekend to preach. We have some difficult themes in our Gospel: from the rejection of the family to the renunciation of all our possessions. However, I would argue that the most difficult part is the invitation to pick up our own cross and follow Jesus.
The Lord, in my mind, is communicating clear expectations in this Gospel. As I am still a pastor in training (PIT), I continue to learn how important it is to communicate clear expectations to those I work with and minister to. As the Scriptures reveal, there was a great crowd following Jesus and he wanted to explain to them the cost of continuing on the road with him in discipleship. Some of them would become his disciples and go on to be there at the foundation of the early Christian community formed at Pentecost.
The Lord is extending these same expectations to us. However, this is not a demand; it is a beautiful invitation. It is similar to the expression of love found in marriage, where the spouses "forsake all others for as long as they both shall live." A Christian, out of love, should desire to give their very self, totally and completely to the Lord. This means choosing the Lord before all else, even over our familial ties. It is not that the Lord desires to break the family, but he is asking if we are willing to choose him before all else, as seen in the examples of many great saints who left their families to proclaim and witness to the Gospel.
As for material possessions, do we find ourselves attached to them? If the Lord asks us, as he did the apostles, would we leave everything and follow him? We should work on detachment from our own possessions as we live in a consumerist society. It is easy to collect and hold onto many things. One way that we can confront this attachment is to work on giving away our possessions, and I would even say giving until it stings. This is in order to make sure that nothing will get in the way of following the Lord.
Finally, as we are aware of life and the crosses that may come, the Lord is giving us this beautiful invitation to join him, and to be with him. We must know that we are never alone, no matter how hard our crosses may be. This does not involve the rejection of the cross, but acceptance. It requires surrender and trust over control. What a difficult thing it is to accept the cross. We may almost prefer the other two options of leaving family and possessions! And yet, the Lord is always inviting us to himself.
To follow Christ, to be a Christian today, is a challenging task to accomplish. The invitation remains. Even with the Lord's patience, he doesn’t want us to delay, and longs for our quick response. Let us ask the Lord for the strength to give ourselves totally and completely back to him.
