News From P.I.T. (Pastor In Training)
So, our excitement continues as we conclude our Easter season. We started in great celebration of Easter with Jesus Christ conquering sin and death through his cross and resurrection, and now we celebrate the end of the Easter season with another gift; the gift of the Holy Spirit descending upon the Apostles at Pentecost.
When it comes to the Holy Spirit, it is hard to describe as it animates and moves everything. The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, is sometimes referred to as the Hebrew word Ruach, which means spirit, breath, or wind. And like the wind, you know it when you feel it, but you never actually see it. So too it is with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit moves in the Church in beautiful ways still today. But in particular, we celebrate the foundation of the Church with the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles at Pentecost.
Two things I would like to point out on this great celebration of Pentecost. First, we need to do our best to prepare ourselves to receive the Holy Spirit. When it comes to the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit is always acting, but we don't always notice or are receptive to the Holy Spirit in our lives. The example I always use is a sailboat. If the sails on the sailboat aren't up, the wind will just go by! But if are willing to do the work and put the sails in the right position to receive the wind, the boat can move at amazing speeds. So too in our lives, if we prepare ourselves to receive the Holy Spirit, we will be surprised at the many places the Lord will take us!
Second, I love the Gospel proclaimed on Pentecost Sunday. Jesus breathes on the Apostles, giving them the gift of the Holy Spirit. That breath of Jesus Christ, the breath of the Holy Spirit, is founded in peace and mercy. Not only do the Apostles receive the Peace of Christ and the Holy Spirit, but they are also given the ability to forgive sins! Again, the Holy Spirit is like the wind; it can’t be seen but only felt. And when we encounter the Lord’s mercy and forgiveness, we can’t see it but can only describe it by the Lord’s peace.
Let us ask the Lord for grace to celebrate the end of our Easter season with great joy in the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the foundation of the Church, that we can be open and prepared to continually receive the movement of the Holy Spirit through God's mercy offered in his Church resting in the Lord’s peace.

The Gift of Incense at the 10 AM Mass on Sundays
- We are blessed with the beauty and reverence of the Mass throughout every weekend liturgy at Our Lady of Mercy. As part of this sacred rhythm, the 10 AM Sunday Mass will include the use of incense, a treasured tradition in the Catholic Church.
- But have you ever wondered why the Church uses incense?
- Incense is rich in meaning—its rising smoke symbolizes our prayers ascending to God, echoing the words of Psalm 141:2: “Let my prayer rise like incense before You.” It’s a visible sign of honor and reverence for God’s presence, used to bless the altar, the cross, the Gospel, the priest, and even the people of God.
- The fragrance of incense also signifies the grace of the Holy Spirit descending upon the faithful, enveloping us in the mystery of divine love. In the ancient words of the Ukrainian Catholic Church:
"Christ, our God, we offer you incense as a pleasing spiritual fragrance... send us in return the grace of your most Holy Spirit." - Historically, incense was used in the Old Testament as part of the worship in the temple, and early Christians continued this sacred practice. By the 5th century, it was part of the Church’s liturgical celebrations across East and West. Its use today connects us not only to the early Church but also to heavenly worship as described in the Book of Revelation.
- When you attend the 10 AM Mass, allow the incense to draw your senses into the mystery. Let it remind you that you are standing on holy ground, that our prayers are heard, and that the Holy Spirit is among us.
We hope this tradition helps deepen your encounter with Christ in the liturgy.

- The goal of the Healing the Whole Person series is to facilitate a personal encounter with Jesus’ merciful love and healing truth in the areas where people have felt disconnected from love and bound by lies. God has worked powerfully in the lives of those who have participated in these series with an open heart. Begin a new chapter in your life of healing, light and peace; invite the Holy Spirit for 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓’𝒔 𝑩𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒅, 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒍𝒚 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒔.
- The course is divided into 8 talks 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙗𝙮 𝙎𝙧. 𝙈𝙞𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙢 𝙃𝙚𝙞𝙙𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘿𝙧. 𝘽𝙤𝙗 𝙎𝙘𝙝𝙪𝙘𝙝𝙩𝒔. The talks are meant to give hope and vision for the healing process, and the reflection times will be an opportunity for the Holy Spirit to prepare your hearts in very personal ways for an encounter with Jesus.

This Friday’s Date Night will explore how physical intimacy is not just the icing on the cake—it’s a core ingredient of a thriving marriage. We’ll look at how emotional and physical connection go hand in hand, and learn five simple ways to keep the spark alive: Speaking, Prioritizing, Anticipating, Responding, and Kindness.
We’ll also reflect on how physical intimacy:- Strengthens the “one flesh” bond
- Restores emotional wellbeing
- Becomes an expression of self-giving love and joy

Charismatic Healing Mass 6/14
- On Saturday, 6/14 at 6pm there will be a Charismatic Healing Mass. A healing Mass is a normal Mass, but it has a special focus on God’s healing power; this will be reflected in the songs, prayers, and scripture readings. Knights of Columbus Scholarship Application due 6/20
- The 2025 Robert H. Weaver Knights of Columbus College Scholarship is now accepting applications through Saturday, June 20.
A total of $2,500 in scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors who will begin a 2- or 4-year college or university program in Fall 2025.

This beautiful tradition is a public act of faith and love—where we walk with Jesus in the Eucharist, proclaiming His real presence in our lives and in the world. - Why walk in a Eucharistic procession?
Because Jesus walks with us every day—through joys, challenges, and ordinary moments. This is our opportunity to walk with Him in return, to witness our faith, and to honor the gift of His Body and Blood, the very heart of our Church. - ✨ All are welcome!

Farewell Reception for Fr. Frank 6/29
- Come celebrate and give thanks for Fr. Frank’s time with us at Our Lady of Mercy—his very first assignment following his ordination to the priesthood!
Fr. Frank was ordained on May 20, 2023, and has spent the entirety of his priesthood—just over two years—serving and ministering to our parish family. Though his time with us has been short, it has been a tremendous blessing. His wit, wisdom, and joyful presence have left a lasting impact on so many hearts.
We are so grateful to God—and to the Diocese of Joliet; Bishop Hicks—for assigning us such a dedicated and faith-filled priest. As he begins his next chapter at St. Liborius Parish in Steger on July 1, let’s gather to send him off with a joyful and heartfelt farewell.
Join us after the 10 AM Mass on Sunday, June 29 for a farewell reception and a chance to express your appreciation. Let’s celebrate all that God has done through Fr. Frank and surround him with our prayers as he steps into this new season of ministry!

Children's Liturgy of the Word resumes 7/13
- Great news for our young disciples and their families!
After a short break during the month of June, Children’s Liturgy of the Word will resume at the 10 AM Mass starting Sunday, July 13. - CLOW is a beautiful and meaningful experience designed especially for children ages 4–7. During Mass, Father will invite the children forward to gather and head to a special space where they’ll hear the Sunday readings in a way that truly resonates with their hearts and minds.
Through storytelling, interactive discussion, and age-appropriate activities, God’s Word comes alive for them—helping them grow in faith and understanding. Just before the Eucharistic Prayer, the children return to rejoin their families, ensuring a full and joy-filled celebration of the Mass together.
This beloved ministry nurtures spiritual growth, inspires curiosity about Scripture, and helps our youngest parishioners discover the beauty of their own faith journey.

Mission Trip Volunteers 7/13 - 7/19
- Please join us in lifting up our high school teens and adult volunteers as they embark on their mission trip to Britt, Iowa. Throughout the week, they’ll be serving in surrounding communities—bringing hope and help through meaningful projects such as minor home repairs, painting, yard work, and general clean-up. They’ll also partner with local agencies on efforts like building wheelchair ramps and assisting elderly and low-income residents with vital needs.
May this experience deepen their faith, reveal their God-given purpose, and help them encounter Christ in those they serve.
St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Drive on 7/19 - 7/20
- The St. Vincent dePaul (SVDP) truck will be in our parking lot the weekend of July 19 & 20 for our Clothing Drive!! Please pick up the SVDP white donation bags found in the atrium entrance and drop them off before and after the 4 PM Mass on Saturday and Sunday until noon.
- We will accept clothing, shoes, linens and books in good or bad condition. Unusable clothing, shoes, linens, and even books generate income for the needy because they are sold for rags or in bulk.
- No baby equipment such as cribs, walkers, strollers, playpens, etc. ALL BABY CLOTHES ACCEPTED
- Small housewares and electronics – dishes, glassware, utensils, toasters, blenders, coffee makers, radios, cd players etc. SORRY NO TELEVISIONS.
- For furniture and large item donations please call 630-231-4658 to schedule a home pickup at a later date or email us at – saintvincentdonate@gmail.com.
- Your donations go to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shops, where many of your donations are given away free to needy families in the community. Some are sold reasonably at thrift shops so needy families can shop with dignity. “Proceeds” from the thrift shops go into a general assistance fund where St. Vincent DePaul. Clothing Drives at the churches help families with rent, mortgage, or utility assistance.
