News From P.I.T. (Pastor In Training)
Some of the parishioners at Our Lady of Mercy have great attention to detail and I can't get anything past them. I was wondering how long it would take for someone to notice that our stationery crucifix was taken out of the sanctuary. It didn't take more than a day before questions were asked to staff and seminarians of its location. Of course this was not a permanent action, but to allow us to move forward to have a permanent Crucifix hung in our Church. We took our heavy processional crucifix that was in the sanctuary, so that we could put a wood backing on it and hang it permanently in our Church for all to see.
As St. Paul says in his first letter to the Corinthians, "we preach Christ crucified…" (1 Cor 1:23). Our Lord's passion and death is foundational to our faith. In our faith, we proclaim Christ came into our world, took on human flesh with all its frailties, and conquered sin and death through the cross. Why is this important and constantly proclaimed in our Scriptures, including our Palm Sunday readings this weekend?
Experiencing suffering and death can bring about a crisis of faith to many. To those who experience it, which we all do throughout our life, the natural question can be asked, “How can a loving God allow this suffering and death to happen?” But what we learn through the life of Christ is that we are not alone in our suffering, and that our God, who loves us; entered into our suffering and conquered death, so that we may ultimately be with our God forever!
The word compassion simply means to suffer with. Our Lord and God, shows his ultimate love for us through his great compassion as he chose to suffer and reveal his love on the cross. Jesus chose to unite himself to us in our humanity and through his death and resurrection bring us to himself in heaven adopted as God’s children through His divinity. Whenever we may have doubts of our faith because of our own personal crosses, may I encourage you to pray and reflect by looking at the Crucifix of our Lord, which is now hung permanently in our church.

The Chrism Mass is a beautiful and solemn liturgy where the bishop blesses the sacred oils used in sacraments throughout the year—Oil of the Sick, Oil of Catechumens, and Holy Chrism. St. Peregrine Prayer Service 4/15
- For those with cancer, serious or chronic illnesses, and their caregivers, come to the St. Peregrine Prayer Service on Tuesday, April 15 following the 6:30 PM Mass. St. Peregrine is the patron saint of the sick especially those experiencing cancer, serious or terminal illness, or chronic illness.
Last Day of Exposition of Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration Chapel 4/17
- The last day for Eucharistic Exposition in the Adoration Chapel this week will be on on Thursday, April 17, with hours from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM.During the Triduum (Holy Thursday through Holy Saturday), the chapel will remain open for silent prayer, but please note:
- The Blessed Sacrament will not be present on Friday and Saturday.
- There will be no exposition on Friday.
The Triduum Begins on Holy Thursday 4/17
Holy Thursday marks the beginning of the Sacred Triduum, the three most solemn and sacred days of the Church year.
- 8:00 AM Morning Prayer. We begin the day with Morning Prayer instead of Daily Mass. On Holy Thursday, the Church does not celebrate a morning Mass, as we gather later for the special evening liturgy.
- 7:00 PM Mass of the Lord’s Supper. This profound liturgy commemorates the Last Supper, when Jesus instituted the Eucharist, the priesthood and the gift of the example of His love.
- 8:30 PM Altar of Repose. After Mass, the Blessed Sacrament is placed on the Altar of Repose, in the Parish Life Center for silent Adoration, recalling Christ’s time in the Garden of Gethsemane. We are invited to "stay and keep watch" with Him. Night Prayer will conclude the evening at midnight.
The Triduum Continues on Good Friday 4/18
Good Friday is the most solemn day of the Church year, as we fast and reflect on the suffering and death of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
- 8:00 AM Morning Prayer. The day begins with Morning Prayer, inviting us to enter into the solemnity of Good Friday united in prayer as a community.
- 12:00 PM Stations of the Cross in Spanish. Join us for a prayerful walk with Jesus on the way to Calvary, prayed in Spanish.
- 3:00 PM Living Stations of the Cross. Presented by our OLM High School Teen Youth Ministry this moving and prayerful depiction of the Passion invites us into a visual and spiritual encounter with Christ’s suffering and love.
- 7:00 PM Celebration of the Lord’s Passion. We gather in solemn silence for the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion, which includes the reading of the Passion according to John, the Veneration of the Cross, and Holy Communion. This is the only day of the year the Mass is not celebrated, as we pause to reflect on Christ’s ultimate sacrifice for our salvation.
- Every year on Good Friday, a collection is taken up to support the work of the Franciscans working in the Holy Land. This Pontifical Collection supports Christians in the Holy Land by funding essential services such as parishes, Catholic schools, religious education, and social and charitable works. It also helps preserve the sacred shrines that are integral to our faith. Your generous contribution aids in maintaining a Christian presence in the very land made holy by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. - In observance of these sacred days, the Parish Offices will be closed on Good Friday, April 18, and Easter Monday, April 21. Regular office hours will resume on Tuesday, April 22. Divine Mercy Novena Begins on Good Friday 4/18
- Jesus asked that the Feast of Divine Mercy—celebrated Divine Mercy Sunday April 27th—be preceded by a special nine- day novena beginning on Good Friday. Each day, we pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy with a different intention given to St. Faustina. Jesus said: “I desire that during these nine days you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy… that they may draw strength and refreshment and whatever grace they need in the hardships of life, and especially at the hour of death.” (Diary, 1209)

The Triduum Continues on Holy Saturday 4/19
Holy Saturday is a day of stillness and quiet anticipation, as the Church pauses between the sorrow of Good Friday and the joy of Easter Sunday.
- 8:00 AM Morning Prayer. We begin the day with Morning Prayer, joining in stillness and reflection as we await the light of the Resurrection.
- 12:00 PM Blessing of Easter Baskets. All are invited to bring your Easter baskets—and children!—to this joyful tradition at OLM. In many Central and Eastern European Catholic communities, families gather on Holy Saturday to have baskets of Easter food blessed in anticipation of the Resurrection feast. Baskets often contain symbolic items such as: Bread (Christ’s body), Eggs (new life), Meats and dairy (the feast of Easter). Share in this cherished celebration of faith, family, and new life!
- 8:00 PM Easter Vigil. If you’ve never been to the Easter Vigil, this is the year to come. This is the most beautiful and powerful liturgy in our Catholic faith—rich in symbolism, Scripture, sacrament, and joy. The liturgy begins outside with the blessing of the fire and the lighting of the Paschal candle, leading us from darkness into the light of Christ.
- Through readings that trace God’s saving work across history, the Vigil prepares our hearts for the Resurrection. New Catholics of the Church are welcomed through Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion. The Alleluia returns, and we rejoice in the victory of Christ over death.
- Come and celebrate the Resurrection in the most meaningful way possible. You won’t forget it.

The Joy of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday 4/20
Easter Sunday is the greatest feast of the Church year—the joyful celebration of Christ’s victory over sin and death.
- The sorrow of the Cross has passed, and now we rejoice in the light of the Resurrection. The ancient greeting of the early Christians still echoes today: “He is risen!”—and the faithful respond, “He is risen indeed!” The Resurrection is not just a moment in history—it is a living reality that continues to renew hearts and transform lives.

Please note: There will be no 5:30 PM Mass on Easter Sunday. - The joy of the Easter Vigil continues into Sunday morning, as our church is filled with flowers, triumphant Alleluias, and the faithful dressed in their Sunday best. Though the structure of the liturgy may feel familiar, Easter is anything but ordinary. As St. Paul reminds us, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:17).

Grief Ministry 6-Week Session Starting 4/21
- Experiencing the loss of a loved one is a difficult journey. Our Lady of Mercy is offering a supportive place for participants (ages 18 and older) to walk through grief together in a faith community to find hope and healing. Walking Through Grief is a weekly support group for six weeks from 1-2:30pm on the following Mondays in Room 217 in the Parish Life Center (PLC): April 21 & 28; May 5, 12, & 19; June 2.

PADS/Hesed House Board on Display 4/25
- The OLM PADS/Hesed House Board will be on display in the Atrium (Door B Entrance). The board contains a “wish-list” of items used to prepare meals for 280 guests at the Hesed House homeless shelter, on the first Tuesday of each month. Drop-off for all items are before all Masses on the weekend of May 3rd and 4th, 2025. Monetary donations can be made via the OLM Online Giving Portal (please specify donation is for Hesed House), or make checks payable to Our Lady of Mercy Church, and write on the memo “Hesed House-PADS”. Need a Helping Hand ~ Aurora Day of Service 5/10
- The annual Aurora Day of Service is coming up on Saturday, May 10, and our high school teens are ready to serve! If you—or someone you know—could use help with outdoor projects like mulch installation, gardening, yard or garage clean-up, or window washing, we’d love to send a team of teens and adult volunteers who will supervise them, your way. Knights of Columbus Scholarship Application due 6/20
- Applications for the 2025 Robert H Weaver Knights of Columbus College Scholarship program are now being accepted through Saturday, June 20th. A total of $2,500 will be awarded to students graduating from High School in 2025 and attending a 2 or 4 year University program starting in the fall of 2025.
